Is there ever a good time to upgrade?

April 22nd, 2009

I received an email today from a frustrated reader who wanted to upgrade from CS3 to CS4, but didn’t know whether to just in case  CS5 appeared on the shelves. His email read:

“…does anyone have any idea when Adobe is going to finish “Photoshop CS” , because they seem to come out
with a new version every couple of months or so, at the moment I have CS3 ,and I would like CS4, only to
find in a another couple of months they will bring out CS5 , then CS6.”

It is stressful deciding whether to fork out the considerable amount of cash for an upgrade or not. Thankfully, Adobe generally tends to release a new version of Photoshop approximately every 18 months (CS3 launched in March 2007 and CS4 launched in September 2008) so you do have a bit of time to make an informed choice. Personally I would always go for the upgrade if you can afford it. Making the transition from CS to CS4 is a hefty jump in terms of features. The jump from CS3 to CS4, however, is much more manageable (although still completely worth it in terms of efficiency improvements and upgraded features).

I guess it largely depends on what you use Photoshop for. If you intend to make a living from it, then staying bang up to date is essential, both for the speed of your workflow and the knowledge of the latest technology. If you just like to dabble now and then, however, then an older version is perfectly capable of producing amazing results. We have readers using Photoshop Elements 5 who are producing stunning digital paintings, as are people using Photoshop CS.

If you are a master of your tools then you can make anything work to your advantage. The latest Photoshop version is not going to make you brilliant, it’s how you use that will define you as an artist. If you are looking to upgrade at the minute then head to http://mail.adobe-direct.com/v?xlJnWlTEJcqcvHHTT where you can save up to £200 off CS4 right now. We estimate (of course we could be wrong) that there are another 11 months before the arrival of the lastest version of Photoshop - plenty of time to get stuck into CS4!

Copyright and your Photoshop Creative web gallery

March 2nd, 2009

Hi guys,We’ve had a bit of trouble on the galleries lately, with people using other people’s images in their artwork. If you’re not quite sure about copyright, then here’s a quick run-down of how it works on the Photoshop creative site - Never use an image without permission from its owner / creator- If your image contains stock images, check that you are abiding by the stock site rules (often you will have to credit the artist / photographer)- Never use images from the internet / books / magazines that do not belong to you- If in doubt - don’t use it!Taking your own stock photos is easy-peasy and enables you to snap just what you’re looking for. This makes your work 100% original and also saves you a scary court case too! So get out there and photograph it yourself : )
