Photoshop Tip: Recover shadows

A quick Photoshop tip for improving shadows in images using the Dodge tool

If your shadows are steeped in black, try using the Dodge tool to paint details back in. Set the tool’s Range to Shadows in the Options bar and its Opacity to 80%.

By brushing over the areas, you’ll gradually see details come flooding back and a balanced exposure can be achieved.

 

  • This effect is a good way of bringing back dark areas but it can leave white area with a grey tone. I tried to bring back detail in a waterfall where most of the water fall was white. On bringing out the lost detail I was left with the grey tinge. Otherwisw this facility is a good way of detailing.
