Photoshop Tips: High-key portrait effect

Glossy magazine are full of images with lots of contrast and with a good reason too – it’s a great way to add impact

The highlights need to be pushed as far as possible without them bleaching out and the darks need to be given extra ‘oomph’.

The Curves adjustment is one of the best ways to achieve this effect.

Start in the top-left corner and move the adjustment’s line up to the limits to emphasise the highlights.

For this effect it’s just a case of moving the midtones to the left slightly, but you might need to take this further.

For the shadows, click on the bottom right area of the line and drag it to the right to make them near black.
