The Vibrance adjustment layer improves colour in a portrait and protects skin tones at the same time
This is opposed to Saturation, which affects the entire image and disregards skin tones.
Use the Create New Adjustment Layer icon in the Layers palette and select Vibrance.
Gently increase the slider and stop just before the skin tones look unnatural.
