But as with all basic Photoshop tools, the Threshold can be used imaginatively. Simply add a few Threshold layers, and position the sliders in different places to give detail to certain areas of a photo. Then mask in with black over the different Threshold layers to pick and choose various contrasts for parts of your image.

The great thing about this technique is that there’s no touching up colours and merging edges. From here you can be as creative as you like. Why not add a new layer, set the blend mode to Colour and paint over the picture?
