Sometimes when you want to improve the contrast of a picture, you want it to be on a specific area of your picture, rather than applying the effect all over.

Masking can be an answer for this, but it’s just as effective to dodge and burn. Do this non-destructively, first by creating a new layer and filling with neutral grey (#808080). Set this layer to Overlay and start using the Dodge and Burn tools on the highlights and shadows respectively to add light and shade. This way, you can touch up the highlights and the shadows of the picture manually without ever editing the photo directly.
