Looking to improve your portraits? We have 5 ideas to start you off

Issue 78 included a selection of five techniques for making your portraits stand out from the crowd. We have a sample one for you here – this is to create a high contrast effect.

Glossy magazines are full of images with high levels of contrast and with good reason – it’s a great way to add punch to a portrait. The aim is simple. The highlights need to be pushed as far as possible without them bleaching out and the darks need to be given extra oomph. The Curves command is one of the best ways of achieving this effect. Start in the top-left corner and move the curve upward to emphasise the highlights. Now attack the midtones. For this effect it’s just a case of moving to the left slightly but you might want to do more depending on your particular image. Finally, the shadows. Click in the bottom-right area of the curve and drag to the right.
